GOALS

Here they are.....

Short term:
- gain telemetry experience (or Versant experience/training)
- become NRP certified (UC Davis has one a month)
- attend ALSO training and certification in Salinas in October
- learn organizational skills and knowledge about meds, procedures, hospital policies

Mid term:
- Transfer to L&D in one year
- attend AWHONN conference
- Cross train PP/Nursery/OR
- Pass RNc
- Complete ACLS-OB certification (boise)
- Complete BSN (chamberlain)

Long term:
- Obtain Master's degree (WHNP/Midwife)
- Try my hand in teaching (hospital based or university based)?
- Get involved in volunteer work with young mothers/preterm babies health

The more I think about it, the more I feel I would take a position in L&D over getting experience in telemetry.....if there were any way that I could do L&D full time and telemetry per diem/casual, I would love that.....allowing me to fully embrace L&D while slowly but surely expanding my M/S knowledge.     Yea right, what hospital is going to pay to train me when they know I don't want to work there very long.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear

I got a response from Rae.  She forwarded my e-mail to Pam Mahal (L&D Director) with a high recommendation, but as it turns out, she is adhering to no new grads in L&D bc of the litigious nature of the unit.  Eva told me that she thinks there were some new grads allowed and some mistakes were made.
So, it appears that I will begin my nursing career in telemetry, which I am okay with, but with that being said, I will heavily consider accepting positions:
- Lodi memorial new grad residency
- Dr's Manteca/Modesto Versant
- Any L&D position

I will make that decision when I come to it.

Dameron is supposed to be rebuilding the hospital with an entire floor dedicated as a Family Maternity Center with the L&D, PP and nursery all together, which I think is essential.  I am adamant about getting cross-trained in all OB units for my education, patient safety and to become a more marketable nurse.

Next submission.........GOALS!

Being True to myself

I have put a lot of thought into where I see myself in 10 years, and 10 years from now, all I see is OB.  So, my thought, at that point, was "Why delay it?"

If OB is what I want, then OB is what I am going to strive for.  3 L&D positions opened up since May 22nd, and I have just sent Rae an e-mail asking her to contact me so that I can either meet with her, talk to her on the phone or correspond via e-mail.

I have been getting either denied (quickly) or not responded to when applying to OB positions, so if I am going to get a chance anywhere, it would be Dameron, right?  I am being honest with all of the hospitals that I am applying to right now, why would I get into something totally different at Dameron?

Ho-Hum.....Excited, nervous, a little worried.  I want to make the best decision for me.

So, as far as picturing myself 10 years from now.....
If I were to work in L&D right away, I would like to work for about 3 years, then apply to UCSF's Midwifery program (I haven't researched many other midwife programs, but UCSF has many great qualities).  If I got into that program, it would take 2 solid years.  So, potentially, I could be a midwife by the time I am 36.

Avery would be 9 and Mason would be 7.  Still babies.

Why do I have to be such a planner?

Applications, Resumes and Cover letters, Oh My!

I have applied to:
- Dameron (CCU/Telemetry)
- SJMC (New grad, float pool)
- Lodi Memorial (New grad residency program)
- Dr's Manteca/Modesto (L&D per diem)

I am taking the NCLEX on June 10th in Roseville.

EEEEE!  Scary.  The ATI codes have become my best friends as well as the allnurses.com Fact Throwing.  Pretty good stuff.

I'll be in touch!

I'm done, done, done!....for now....

So, as of May 20th at 1930, I am officially done with nursing school.

My speech went well.  I am happy that it seemed to be received well by the audience.

I also won the Outstanding Achievement Award from the SNA and Debbie O'Sullivan gave a very detailed speech about my achievements while at Delta College.

Melanie Payne won the Mary Randall Award.

All went well, and I am happy and sad all at the same time.

Speech

Here is the speech I have prepared for graduation......

August 20th, 2007 seems SO far away…670 days to be exact (not that I am counting), and how far we’ve come since that day.  The day we walked into the skills lab, learned how to make a bed and were petrified when we thought we were going to be tested on this very technical, complex skill.

Like I said…. We’ve come a LONG way!

And we all had to make sacrifices along the way.  Although it may not have seemed worth it at the time, it sure seems worth it now.

During the more difficult times in nursing school, many of us had to do things like…

-       let dishes remain in the sink for days on end

-       allow the laundry to pile so high that our kids played king of the mountain on it and, well, our husband’s just bought new underwear

-       eat fastfood so often that everyone at Wendy’s knew us by name

-       study so late for so many nights that our spouses thought spending time with us was falling asleep on the couch next to us and our textbook

-       miss so many of our friends’ parties that when they told us they liked our new haircut, we didn’t have the heart to tell them…. we cut it 4 months ago.

We appreciate our families and friends for enduring these times with us.

BUT, with all of those sacrifices came wonderful rewards

Delta college really prepared us well for the field of nursing…but you know, there are still some things that we feel would’ve prepared us even better.  So, if the instructors could make a note to address these few issues that we are still unsure of….

….like

-       what to do when a TV falls on a pt

-       what to say to the doctor with waxy ears who wants to borrow your stethoscope

-       what to do when you have just fainted after watching a tube being placed down someone’s nose

-       what to say to an elderly female patient when she becomes a little too fond of her male nursing student

-       what to do when a doctor mistakes you for a resident and pulls you in to help with a delivery

-       how to not feel awkward when you walk into an Indian patient’s room and mistakenly speak Spanish to her

-       how to keep a straight face when you remove a patient’s socks and the air fills with foot dust

-       how to look professional after you have hit your patient in the eye with the cap of a syringe

-       how to get up with dignity when your gurney catches onto your watch, dragging you with it straight into the wall

-       how to keep a straight face when a patient loses control of their bladder on the front of your scrub top

-       how to inconspicuously make your way to the break room to change when a delivery ends in an explosion of who knows what all over your arm

-   at what point we will realize that when someone is calling, "Nurse, Nurse", they're talking to US

-       what to do when you are with someone for the first minutes of their life

-       or what to say when you are with someone for the last.

Okay, so maybe we just need to figure these things out for ourselves, but I can tell you that our instructors left us with a strong sense of pride. Pride in our profession, our school and the types of nurses we know we will become.  We can now take a step away from the days when we were nervous about our bed-making capabilities and a step toward becoming a confident, competent, empathetic and understanding Registered Nurse.

JOB time

So, I have been applying for positions for about 3 weeks now.  Some are out there (L&D), some are more within reach (float pool).  I am in the process of getting set up for an interview at Dameron for CCU or Tele, depending on what they think I am capable of.
My ultimate goal, of course, is L&D, but I truly don't think i want to start there.  It would be nice to have CCU background, then use that knowledge to transition into L&D and possibly high risk L&D.  I think high risk would be amazing....it would combine the the two things i love...the labor process and ICU pathophysiology.

I still have UCSF in my long term goal, and I have already paid an app fee to chamberlain to get an RN to BSN online.  i figure i will start that in september to give myself time to get into my job.  I'll cross my fingers that my work with pay for a portion.
I am signed up to do ACLS on June 4th and 5th, which i think will be a good way to refresh my ekg memory (i have been looking at strips, and I am actually surprised at how quickly it is  coming back).

I have a letter of reco from carla (OB), ana (PICU)  I have asked shelba and julie kay.

Any-who...I am much more open to things than I thought I'd be.  if we had been in a crazy shortage,  i know i would go straight to L&D, but i am excited to give CCU a chance.  who knows, it may be perfect for me!
